WINTERGARDEN is nearby many attractions, activities, and areas of interest. Just for starters why not do as we do and take a glass of wine, walk the 100 meters to the end of our street, sit down on this bench and take in the peace and serenity of the Bay. If you are lucky you may even get a close – up look at whales who come to calf during the months of July – September each year.
Activities and Attractions
The Horsedrawn Tram
Explore nearby Granite Island at Victor Harbor. Take the historic tram across the old wooden causeway to the island. Walk the nature park or take a fishing rod and try your luck on the famous Screwpile Jetty. Towards dusk take a discovery tour of the Island’s fairy penguins.
The Whale Centre
Every year during the winter months the Southern Right whales visit Encounter Bay. The Whale Information Centre near The Causeway at Victor Harbor is a font of whale information, resources and exhibits.
The Bluff
A famous local geological landmark was named Rosetta Heads by explorer Matthew Flinders, this prominent headland is formed of granite which originated when magma was squeezed up from the continental crust some 500 million years ago, its within easy walking distance of Wintergarden.
Steamranger
Always popular is the heritage steam and diesel hauled trains which ply between the River Murray Mouth at Goolwa and Victor Harbor visiting the small towns along the way. An inexpensive and must do activity especially during the cooler months of winter when the historic steam trains are in service.
Urimbirra Wildlife Experience
Set amongst giant old gum trees see kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, emus, dingos and wombats.
Surfing
The south coast of Encounter Bay enjoys excellent conditions for the keen surfer. For those who don’t want to surf an excellent walking/biking track takes you all the way from Wintergarden to the surf beaches of Port Elliot and Middleton.
The Heysen Trail
Enjoy wonderful coastal walks via Rosetta Head part of South Australia’s famous 1100km long trail named after famous landscape artist Hans Heysen. The walk takes in superb cliff views dipping down onto remote sandy beaches. Take your backpack picnic and enjoy this wonderful scenic part of South Australia.
Walking Trails
There are many interesting walks close to Wintergarden including the Hindmarsh River Estuary Walk which includes a boardwalk through flooded mangrove trees. The Inman River Walk and Hindmarsh Falls Walk are all interesting experiences for the keen walker.
Golf Courses
The closest golf course is the Victor Harbor Golf Club with its well renowned spectacular 1st tee which overlooks the Bay. This golf course is immaculately maintained and a pleasure to play. Navigators Restaurant serves lunches and dinners most days.
Wineries
The famous Fleurieu Peninsula is known world wide for the quality of its wines. WINTERGARDEN is the perfect base to explore the regions wineries including McLaren Vale, Currency Creek and Langhorne Creek.
Kangaroo Island
Tours of this famous Australian Icon can be arranged through local booking offices, so why not stay at WINTERGARDEN on your way to KI and enjoy the wonderful scenic Range Road through to the car ferry at Cape Jervis.
